My day at - Arsenal 2-0 Wigan

I really enjoyed Tuesday's trip to London & Arsenal's win over Wigan in the Carling Cup.
I drove from Liverpool to St Helens, to my friends house, then in his car, we headed South at about 11am. Reports of heavy snow added a  bit of interest to the weather outside, but we didn't see much until we passed through the Midlands, where the snow was fairly thick. The roads were surprisingly open, and we continued South without delay or incident, and as we approached the M25, the skies turned deep grey and the snow fell creating a picturesque & indeed slightly dangerous approach to our stopping town of Esher.

A train into Waterloo station followed by some welcomed hot food at McDonald's, preceeded our discovery of the student protests at Trafalger Square. What looked like over 100 riot Police blocked off every entrance & tried to contain the students. Windows were smashed, and police charged, but in truth, the action was a bit of a let down.

So on to the Emirates, and by now after a few visits, using the tube was a lot easier,we arrived at the Arsenal
at about 6.30pm. Another hot cup of tea,  a mooch around the packed Club shop then into the stadium and up to our seats in the upper tier. I was expecting us to play a strong team, with some kids, like JET and Eastmond, but they both started on the bench, and it was an experienced starting XI, of Schezeny, Koscielny, Djourou, Gibbs, Walcott, Denilson, Wilshere, Van Persie, Vela and Bendtner. The Wigan team was much as expected, only dangerman N'zogbia was on the bench with the pacy Victor Moses up front.

In the first half I thought the posession was fairly mixed, Arsenal were guilty of some sloppy passing including a lazy back pass from Eboue that almost got us into trouble. Bendtner should have scored from a RvP free kick - heading wide, and Vela missed a great chance after being put clean through 1 on 1 with the keeper, he chipped it off target. We took the lead from a corner that Wigan captain Alcaraz turned the ball into his own net and there was a relief amongst the supporters in the stands. Moses was a danger for Wigan, and he turned Eboue inside out before shooting wide in one of Wigan's few chances in the game. They knowcked the ball about well enough, and looked like they could create opportunities, but often the killer pass or cross was missing from Wigan's approach play. Chances came & went for Arsenal as Vela & Walcott could have added more goals, and finally it was Niklas Bendtner who tapped in the 2nd after typically good approach play. Eastmond, Nasri and JET came on for Wilshere, RvP and Bendtner towards the end of the game. In the end it was a fairly easy win for the Gunners, and i was glad to see a few goals. Gibbs impressed me at the back, and it was great to watch Jack Wilshere command the midfield as he did. However, i was disappointed with the overall perfeomance of NB52, he was not holding the ball up, sloppy in posession, and generally poor. i wouldn't be sad if we sold Bendtner in January. A couple of fans ran onto the pitch before the end, which was entertaining, Eboue finally catching one fan, who our stewards, who look so unfit, couldnt handle.

So a 2-0 win and a satisfying win. More goals should have been scored, but we are a step closer to our first trophy in 5 years :)

A semi final draw Vs Ipswich has been kind to us, and over 2 legs, you have to feel the Arsenal will be heading to Wembley soon.

So we happily headed back to the tube, singing songs like, Harry Redknapp is a wanker, is a wanker & Gareth Bale, is a monkey, is a monkey! We hate Man U we hate Man U - simple but funny. Got back to Liverpool at 4.30am, then was in work for 9am on Wednesday morning! Thats dedication. It's good to be a Gooner!

Braga V Arsenal Preview

Is 3 nights of sleep enough time to recover from the disappointment of our last performance? We certainly hope so, as Arsenal travel to the North West of Portugal to face Braga in the Champions League.

A win for Arsenal will almost certainly see the Gunners through to the 2nd stage of the competition, and leave Braga to settle for a Europa League berth.

TEAM NEWS

Gael Clichy misses the game with a back problem, giving Kieran Gibbs a chance to impress at full back. Andrei Arshavin and Robin Van Persie have been left out, the Russian forward has been given a break, he has featured in almost every game this season, & RvP needs to work on his fitness.

Arsenal are also still without Almunia, Diaby & Varmaelen through injury.

For Braga, Paulão has not played since sustaining a thigh problem against SC Olhanense on 23 October. Quim ruptured his right Achilles tendon in pre-season training and is expected to be out until the new year.

Braga

UEFA milestones
• Braga have scored 95 goals in UEFA competition.

UEFA Champions League statistics
• Braga have won ten corners, the lowest total in the competition.

Latest domestic information
• Braga's Portuguese Cup fourth round fixture at SL Benfica, scheduled for 20 November, was postponed due to the NATO summit which took place in Lisbon on 19 and 20 November. The tie will now be held on 12 December.

• After 11 Liga games Braga have 14 points, exactly half what they had at the same stage last season when they were top of the table.

• Braga have lost eight times in all competitions this season, one more than in the whole of last term.

• Braga have kept two clean sheets in 11 league outings this season – they averaged one every two games last term, conceding just 20 goals all campaign.

• Braga suffered their first home league defeat under Domingos Paciência on 7 November, going down 3-2 against SC Beira-Mar. It was the side's first top-flight loss at the Municipal Stadium since a 3-1 reverse against Benfica on 17 May 2009.

• Paciência has nonetheless overseen 18 wins in 20 home league games since taking the helm – A. Naval 1º Maio were the only other team to take points off them at the Municipal Stadium, drawing 0-0 on 13 December 2009.

• Aníbal Capela was handed his Liga debut against Beira-Mar; Custódio made his first league appearance for the club.

• On 13 November Braga lost 2-1 at Vitória SC, finishing the game with ten men after Alan – who had scored their goal – was sent off (45).

• Braga have not won away in the Liga in six attempts this term.

• Braga won every match in the Liga last season when they registered first but three times already this term they have dropped points after forging ahead, at Guimarães, FC Porto and FC Paços de Ferreira.

Arsenal

UEFA milestones
• Arsenal's defeat at FC Shakhtar Donetsk was their 50th in UEFA competition.

UEFA Champions League statistics
• Arsenal have scored 15 goals, more than any other side. Manchester United FC hold the record for goals scored in a UEFA Champions League group stage with 20 in 1998/99.

Latest domestic information
• Saturday 20 November: Arsenal FC 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur FC
(Nasri 9, Chamakh 27; Bale 50, Van der Vaart 67pen, Kaboul 85)
Fabiański; Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy; Song, Denilson, Fàbregas; Nasri (Rosický 77), Arshavin (Walcott 77), Chamakh (Van Persie 68)

• Arsenal let slip a two-goal lead to lose at home to north London rivals Tottenham for the first time since 1993. The Gunners have lost successive home league games for the first time since 1997.

• Eight of the 15 Premier League goals Arsenal have conceded this season have come in the final 15 minutes of either half, and none in the first 15 minutes. Indeed, they have conceded only once in the first half-hour.

• Arsenal suffered a second home league defeat of the season against Newcastle United FC on 7 November.

• The Gunners have won four of their last five away matches in all competitions, the exception being their Matchday 4 defeat at Shakhtar.

• Bacary Sagna opened the scoring in Arsenal's 2-1 win at Everton FC on 14 November, his first goal since 23 March 2008.

• Alex Song has four goals to his name this term – he scored just once in 50 outings for club and country last season.

• Arsène Wenger's side's run of three successive clean sheets was ended at Shakhtar; they have managed only one in four games since.

• Arsenal will host Wigan Athletic FC in the League Cup quarter-finals on 30 November.

My Prediction

Sunderland Vs Everton preview

Monday Night Football brings us to the Stadium of light, where Sunderland entertain Everton in what should be an entertaining game in the Premier League.

The home team will be keen to maintain the form which saw them beat Chelsea 3-0 last time out, and Everton will be looking to get back to winning ways after a home loss to Arsenal in their previous game.

TEAM NEWS

Sunderland striker Darren Bent is back in training after a hamstring strain and is hoping to feature for the first time since October.

Danny Welbeck (groin) and Anton Ferdinand (hamstring) are also expected to be available, but John Mensah is still out with a shoulder injury.

Everton will again be without Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who serves the second of a three-match ban.

Toffees striker Yakubu will hope to feature on his 28th birthday.

HEAD TO HEAD

• Everton have won 10 and drawn two of the last 12 meetings in all competitions with Sunderland.

• The Toffees enjoyed their joint-biggest Premier League win against any team when they beat Sunderland 7-1 in November 2007.

• Sunderland have only scored one goal in their last five Premier League games against Everton.

Sunderland

• Manchester United are the only team to have won at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League since Boxing Day 2009.

• The Black Cats have kept clean sheets in their last three home matches.

• They have only hit the target with 32% of their attempts at goal, the lowest percentage in the Premier League

• And they have only had four different goalscorers in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side.

Everton

• Everton have lost only four of their last 24 Premier League matches.

• But they are winless in their last three outings.

• Tim Cahill has scored four goals in his last seven league appearances.

MY PREDICTION

Sunderland 2-1 Everton

Last season's corresponding result

Sunderland 1-1 Everton FT
(HT 1-0)

* Bent 17 * Fellaini 85

What the manager's had to say post match - 26th December 2009

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce:

"It's horrific when you concede so late on. We have just gone too deep and it looked as if Everton were going to score.

"You're always disappointed to concede when you get so close to full time.

"I'm disappointed we couldn't keep a clean sheet. There are still improvements to be made, but if someone asked me at the start of the season that we would be 10th at Christmas, then I would have taken that."

Everton boss Dave Moyes:

"I thought near enough from the start we just about completely dominated the game. They scored a very good goal and put us back.

"If we hadn't got anything out of the game it would have been a travesty. I thought the goal was reward for how the players have been playing in the last week or two.

"I think in Marouane Fellaini is probably the best midfielder in the country at the moment. He was exceptional today and his goal was reward for the way he played today."

Lionel Messi - Genius

Lionel Andre Messi was born on the 24th June 1987, in Rosario, the 3rd largest city in Argentina.

He began playing football at a young age and left hometown club Newell's Old Boy's and moved to Europe where Barcelona offered him treatment on his growth hormone deficiency.

At age 13 Messi was only 4 foot 6 inches tall, but Barcelona saw his potential and supported his development.

">

He made his debut in the 2004/05 season aged 17 and broke his team record of being the youngest footballer to score a league goal.

In 2006/07 season, he became a regular in the first team, and scored 14 goals in 26 games, including a hat-trick against Real Madrid.

">

Why can't we get commentators like that?

In the seasons that have followed, Leo Messi has gone on to become the world's greatest player, at arguably the world's greatest club, Barcelona.

Here's a video of all the 47 goals Messi scored last season (2009-2010)

">

Tonight he has scored a hat-trick in Barcelona's 8-0 win at Almeria, that makes it 22 for the season, and 62 goals in his last 60 appearences!

Thanks to @Mickycfc for the info

Is he going to become the greatest player ever?

Here are my predictions for today's games in the Premiership.

Arsenal 3-1 Spurs
Birmingham 0-1 Chelsea
Blackpool 2-1 Wolves
Bolton 1-1 Newcastle
Liverpool 2-0 West Ham
Man Utd 4-1 Wigan
WBA 2-2 Stoke

Do you agree with any of my predictions?

Birmingham Vs Chelsea Preview

As well as Arsenal Vs the Spuds, there are another 6 games on Saturday in the English Premier League.

Possibly the most important game will be at St Andrew's. Birmingham Host Chelsea in a game that could highlight the pressure Chelsea are under at the moment. Another defeat after losing 3-0 to Sunderland last Sunday would be damaging to the Blues' chances of retaining their title.

With no Essien, Terry, Lampard, Drogba or Alex, Chelsea looked almost ordinary, and vulnerable to conceding goals, which is something you never associate with Ancelotti's team. They will be hoping Malouda & Anelka can come up with the goods and show that last week was a one off.

Birmingham haven't won since a 3-1 victory over Blackpool in late October, and are still without the influential forward James McFadden, but with Chelsea's problems in defence, they will be confident of causing an upset.

Match Facts

• The Blues of Birmingham and Chelsea have met 80 times in the league. Chelsea have won 37 matches compared to City's 19.

• Birmingham have not won in their last 16 league matches against Chelsea since a 5-1 home victory in the old Division Two in March 1980. City have lost five of the subsequent seven home league games.

• St Andrew's was the only Premier League ground at which Chelsea failed to score last season. The two sides fought out a goalless draw on Boxing Day.

• Birmingham have drawn each of their last seven home encounters against so-called "Big Four" opposition.

• City have recorded only one league win in their last 11 games.

• If selected, Liam Ridgewell and Scott Dann with be making their respective 200th and 150th career starts.

• The three league defeats suffered by Chelsea represent their most at this stage of a season for a decade - they went on to finish sixth at the end of the 2000/01 campaign.

• Despite their injury problems, Chelsea have scored the most goals (28) and conceded the fewest (8) in the Premier League to date.

• Chelsea have failed to score in four of their last eight league games. They had netted 38 goals in their previous eight Premier League fixtures, dating back to April.

• The Blues have lost four of their last five league games when conceding the opening goal.

• If selected, Salomon Kalou will be featuring in his 200th game for Chelsea.

The referee for this match will be Mark Halsey.

My prediction is a tight 1-0 win to Chelsea.

Bring on the Spuds

Date - Saturday 20th November 2010

Event - Arsenal Vs Tottenham Hotspur

Venue - The Emirates Stadium

Buckle up everyone, Arsenal's season is ready to take off, with a win over North London rivals Spurs in Saturday's early kick off.

---------------------- Team News -----------------------

Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny is available after serving a two-game ban for his red card against Newcastle.

The Gunners will monitor midfielder Jack Wilshere, who picked up a back problem at Everton last weekend.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is back in training following ankle surgery, and could win a place on the bench.

The club will assess Aaron Lennon's hamstring problem, but fellow midfielder Tom Huddlestone is out for three months with an ankle injury.

---------------------- Match Facts ----------------------

• This is the 147th North London derby.

• Arsenal's 2-1 loss at White Hart Lane in April was their first defeat to Tottenham in 21 league games.

• Spurs have won only one Premier League game away to Arsenal, a 3-1 victory in May 1993. The Gunners have taken 29 points from a possible 33 in their last 11 league games against their north London rivals.

• Tottenham have kept one clean sheet in their last 23 Premier League matches against Arsenal.

• The Gunners have won five of their last six league games.

• Arsenal's next goal will be their 50th in all competitions this season. Saturday's game will be their 20th match of the campaign.

• Spurs have conceded 15 goals in their last seven league and cup games. They have not kept a Premier League clean sheet since holding Manchester City to a goalless draw on the opening day of the season.

• It is 68 league games since Tottenham last won away to one of the top flight's 'big four' of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. They have drawn 20 games and lost 48 since beating Liverpool 2-1 in August 1993.

• Jermaine Jenas has scored four goals in his last seven appearances against Arsenal in all competitions.

-------------------- Key battles ------------------------

Walcott Vs Assou-Ekotto - Theo may get a lot of joy against the vulnerable full back on the counter attack, with Bale pushing up, Arsenal should get space up the right wing

Song Vs Van Der Vaart - Can Arsenal's new 'Vieira' keep Spurs' dangerman quiet? We are hoping Song has a great game & stops VdV creating and scoring as he has done this term.

Crouch Vs our defence, can we handle the power and lankyness of this 18ft striker? May be a key battle in the contest. Djourou & Koscielny will have a tough afternoon.

---------------------- Prediction ----------------------

Im going for a 3-1 win to the mighty Arsenal!

Welcome to my new Blog!

Hello, and welcome to my new blog. I'll be writing about different aspects of football, depending on what's going on.
